While most people think of fish when they think of omega-3s, there are actually three different types of omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). EPA and DHA are found primarily in fish, while ALA is found in plant-based foods. The body can convert ALA to EPA and DHA, but this conversion is very inefficient. For this reason, it’s important to get omega-3 fatty acids from a variety of sources. Omega 3 concentrate - fats have a positive effect on a number of conditions. Studies show that omega-3s improve symptoms of depression. Other studies have shown that whole fish consumption is significantly lower in patients with major depressive disorder. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for proper fetal development, and supplementation during pregnancy has also been linked to decreased inflammation in children ages 6 to 12 months. Infants who do not get enough omega-3s from their mothers can develop vision problems or fail to gain weight as they grow older, but giving babies omega-3s early in life seems to help prevent these problems.
